Ashley Noseworthy is the 2022 Trailblazer Award recipient.
CEO, Edgewise Environmental
Ashley Noseworthy, CEO of Edgewise Environmental, received the Trailblazer Award, sponsored by Cox & Palmer. This award recognizes female entrepreneurs who own and operate businesses excelling in a non-traditional industry for women or have established a business in an industry uncommon to the area in which it operates.
With an extensive background in marine biology, Noseworthy said starting a business wasn’t top of mind. But, when she began studying the impact of human noise on the marine environment, she saw a gap in the market for training and consulting.
Edgewise Environmental is a marine environmental consultancy focused in marine mammals, seabirds, and underwater noise. The company developed and delivers Canada’s first formalized training program for marine mammal observers, seabird observers, and passive acoustic monitoring operators. Edgewise works with any industry within the blue economy in those niche areas.
Noseworthy thrives on being part of a larger community through her business and volunteer networks. She sits on multiple boards across the province and nationally. She is a proponent of continuing professional development and a strong advocate for women in STEM, engaging within the community in outreach initiatives and mentorship programs.
Noseworthy works hard at keeping a work-life balance and makes time for the things that bring her joy, which generally involve being on or in the ocean. She is an avid SCUBA diver and loves travel. She also enjoys swimming, photography, and being outdoors. She notes that physical activity helps to ground her.
“NLOWE has helped in so many ways. When I started my business and grew, NLOWE reached out to me along the way, checking in to see if they could help. And that means a lot.”
Noseworthy says it was the support of family, friends, and mentors that bolstered the idea for the business and helped her bring it to life. “NLOWE has helped in so many ways. When I started my business and grew, NLOWE reached out to me along the way, checking in to see if they could help. And that means a lot. Having someone reach out offering guidance and resources is incredibly important during that time,” says Noseworthy. “It’s true that it takes a village. But ultimately, our (Edgewise Environmental’s) success has been because we’ve had a fantastic team behind us, and NLOWE has undoubtedly been (and continues to be) part of that team.”
